MLX: a practical entry point into machine learning on Mac

Tech2Apple editorial · Source-based guide · Updated October 2026

MLX is an array framework for machine learning on Apple silicon. Its documentation covers lazy evaluation, unified memory, automatic differentiation, and model examples. These ideas are useful starting points for understanding how an AI workload maps to a Mac.

Why unified memory matters

Start by reading the framework’s unified memory guide, then explore a small array example. A shared memory architecture changes how you think about moving data, but it does not mean model size or available memory stops mattering.

Try a bounded experiment

Follow the official quick start, record the framework version and machine configuration, and compare the result of a small operation before trying a larger model. Read the model license and dependencies separately.

Read research with context

A research implementation is not a shipping iOS or macOS capability. Reproducing an example is not proof of a performance claim across other models and devices. We have not run comparative MLX benchmarks for this article.
